All writers in the LOTR fandom may blow off steam here about things they have encountered and do not like...blowing off steam can be a learnin experience too... ;D

let me start :
1. I hate it when a fic gets so recognized cos it has more smut scenes then plot development if the idea is good.
2. I hate it when they make elves look like teenagers with raging hormonal problems.
3. I hate it when they trash new girl in ME just cos there are lots of bad ones out there.
ok I'm done for now... ;D

Oh, Dear! The dreaded Mary Sue rears her ugly head again. I agree! People are so willing to trash any OFC (Original Female Character) and automatically apply a MS label to her even when you follow Tolkien's own 'rules'. If you look at some of the bizarre rules, it would mean that you couldn't have a female character (I guess males are capable of reproducing in Middle Earth), they can be elven, but can't have any elven characteristics. You can't do anything with them that has any sort of strength, nor can you have them have any sort of relationship. Even though Tolkien himself created probably one of the most obvious Mary Sue's -- Eowyn! A strong independent-minded female in love with Aragon then has her kill a Nazgul where men are unable to. You can't win, Minu. Just write a good story. I've read some really wonderful stories (thinking of Captain, my Captain by Isabeau on HASA) that technically would be considered a Mary Sue. Her character is a OFC who survives an orc attack to become an Ithilien Ranger who is in love with Faramir who is incidentally the ONLY male who doesn't fall in love with her. She has an affair with one of the twins, Imrahil falls in love with her, she is a great warrior who defends Faramir on the Pelennor fields and turns out to be a close relative to Aragorn. Yet it's a great well-written, wonderful story. Then I've read some really awful fanfic that actually made it to the finals of the Mithril awards -- and I mean really awful real Mary Sue's. It all comes down to how it's written, I think. If you have a good well fleshed-out character and a good story, it should be able to hold up to the critics. And always remember: You are never going to be able to please everybody, so try to please yourself first! As for what I dislike about LOTR fanfics -- Hmmm, all the slash perhaps. Boromir/Faramir pairings, Aragorn/Legolas, Legolas/Gimli, Faramir/Aragorn, Elrohir/Elladan, Celeborn/Haldir, Haldir and anyone male...I guess that's the only way the writers can get around the Mary Sue label? I know there's more, just can't think of them right now, so I reserve the right to add another post to this thread, LOL.

I know...but it's pretty frustrating when you don't get the least bit of recognition and you put so much effort..I shall not add to my list till you have finished adding...
