You're right, Daydreamer, Orly's eyes are naturally brown but they made him wear contacts to change his eyes blue for Legolas. There are certain scenes where his eyes appear brown (Helms Deep for instance). I've heard two stories, one from Peter Jackson saying that Orly had a scratch on his eye and couldn't wear his contacts for a while, and another from some other cast member (I just can't remember who it was at this time) saying he simply forgot to put them in. Could be a little of column A and a little of column B.

does it say in the book what legolas' eyes and hair colour is because i read somewhere that it doesn't actually tell in there and i just could not be bothered to go back and read the whole book again.

No where in any of the books does it say that Legolas has blonde hair and blue eyes. Everyone has just assumed that he is blonde. (or should that be blond?) He is referred to as being 'fair' but in that day and age, fair did not necessarily mean blonde but "pleasing to the eye". It can also refer to a person's good nature.
Also, there's no real mention of elves having pointed ears either! The only time it's ever mentioned is if you read some of Tolkien's letters -- there is one to a publisher who is asking about a drawing on the cover of one of this subsequent books about elves and he describes them as the standard 'pixie' style elf not at all like how he describes them in the book. Strange, eh?

wow but now you think about it you can't imagine legolas any other way could you? all the lotr characters have become like that. and also didn't boromir have darker hair in the book but PJ made it lighter so people wouldn't mistake him for aragorn. don't really see how that could happen

Yes, they were all descendents of Numenoreans who had grey eyes and dark hair. Both the Rangers of the North (Dunedain) and the house of the Stewards (Boromir and Faramir) were of these lines and so had ebony hair and dark grey eyes. There is a specific section that comes to mind when Faramir and Eowyn are standing by the Houses of Healing where it talks of their hair intermingling -- ebony and gold. So I imagine you're right that Peter Jackson didn't want people getting characters mixed up. The one person I wanted to see in ROTK never showed up in the movie -- that was Prince Imrahil who was a descendent both of a Numenorean and an elf named Mithrellas. So they still had an elven look about them -- beardless for instance. (Don't get me started on Cirdan's beard, LOL) The poor Professor couldn't keep his stories straight

but could you imagine trying to keep all the storylines running in your head all in order as well as all the background history. i think he did a bloody good job overall. however i prefer the hobbit because of the simpler storyline
