I've found a really good website that discusses various writing exercises and such. www.burningvoid.com/write/general.php It also talks about listening to other writers and realizing that you can't accept what they say at face value (they're talking about writers who have written books about 'how to write'). Minu, there is a specific person on the web who just sprang to mind when I read this section though... Sound like someone we know, Minu? A certain person who says you shouldn't use gerunds or adverbs or "was"? And my favourite...

My best writing technique was taught to me by a teacher i had in high school
Shut up,stop talking and write something!
Ok not a technique but take it literally and it's true-writing comes from what's around you-noise usually equals waffling where as quiet can be inspirational...
Did i sound clever??

yes you did(why sound? you are smart)...and that is very usefull to both reading and writing...although I have experienced times when I can't write unless I have a certain type of music in the background...that and the no one in the room with closed doors!

;D Music is very inspirational-it can take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions so havin it in the background is perfect. I usually get inspired at night-lights off in bed trying to sleep...then i have to get up and write something down. Can be annoying...

Ok, in the middle of writing a new story and my beta has suggested a change to the very beginning of my story. I am not disputing her views but am interested to see what you have to say re the differences in writing style:
Style 1: Flames crackled around Tarkil as he fought his way to the child’s screams. Acrid black smoke stung his eyes so he bent down and crawled along the floor towards the sound.
A blazing piece of beam fell from the roof a few feet away, a large portion of burning thatch showered him in a rain of sparks. He beat the smoldering pieces from his long black hair and legs then resumed crawling away from the intense heat. The child must be in the back of the room, he realized, as her screams reduced to hacking sobs for her mother
Style 2: Tarkil fought his way toward the the high-pitched screams. Flames cracked around him, acrid smoke stung his eyes. He bent down, then knelt to scramble along the floor, the heated wood burning his hands and knees.
A beam fell. It's blaze exploded and showered him with flaming coals. With a curse, he knocked the smoldering peices away to continue his search for the child, her screams now reduced to hacking sobs.
********** So which do you like ? Or would you take bits and pieces of both? Just interested...

Prefer the first one-but without the mention of the mother.

Just found a good article on "Ten Mistakes Writers Don't See (But Can Easily Fix When They Do) " It's an interesting article as they tell you what the mistakes are -- using actual sections from published writers and show how they could be made better. Covers a whole gamut -- flat writing, not repeating words, empty adverbs, phony dialogue, etc. It's about general fiction writing, or writing of any kind. www.holtuncensored.com/ten_mistakes.html

I particularly love the part about original characters and we can refer to it for Reviews...if only we have more members
